The meeting will take place in the Garden Hall of Watlington House 44 Watlington Street, Reading, RG1 4RJ. Arrive from 1.40pm for a 2pm start.
A B Walker is a seventh-generation business, and has been in the Walker family for five generations. Started by Mr Benjamin Dunn in 1826, it was passed to his grandson-in-law Alfred Blyth Walker in 1882, and has remained in the family ever since. The current owner is Julian Walker TD DL.
Julian will talk to us about the history of A B Walker – the family and the profession, including a review of the funeral profession, the challenges of the moment and some of his memories of 30 years of funerals.
Julian’s grandparents were active members of Reading Civic Society for around twenty years.
Whilst the event is organised for Reading Civic Society members it is open to all. Donations of £5 per head from non-members are requested on entry.
There is no need to book.
Access:
The Garden Hall of Watlington House is accessed by the double garden gates in the garden wall on South Street RG1 4AP or using What 3 words https://w3w.co/broke.critic.pouch. There are ramps to access the hall but the doors are not quite wide enough for wheelchairs. There is not a disabled loo.
Getting there:
Parking in the garden area next to the hall is limited to 4 places, if you have restricted mobility and need to park close to the hall please email the Chairman Richard Bennett at ReadingCivicSociety@googlemail.com.
The Times Car park (formerly NCP) on South Street (RingGo number 43108) is cheaper than street parking in South Street / Sidmouth Street. .
Buses stop on London Road and on Kings Road a short walk from the Garden Hall.
