A bit of background
Born in Reading, after a long career with the local police, Roy founded and was the chairman of Thames Valley Cleaning Contractors (Reading) Limited. In the 1970s he became one of the first five original vice presidents of Reading Football Club. In the 1980s he was a director of the club when, with the support of Roger Smee (former Reading player and Reading FC chairman from 1983 to 1990), he successfully prevented Robert Maxwell and Frank Waller from merging Reading FC with Oxford United to become the Thames Valley Royals in 1983. Roy encouraged the now Sir John Madejski OBE DL to become the club’s chairman in 1990, which transformed the club’s fortunes at that time.
Roy was the president of STAR, the Supporters’ Trust at Reading, served as the president of the Reading Lions Club and was actively involved in both organisations till his death.
He was absolutely fundamental in saving Reading FC from extinction. As the plaque states, “Reading Football Club lives on thanks to Roy Tranter”.
