Join the Reading Civic Society

Our strength as a civic society depends on our members, and new and active members are always needed. If you would like to get involved in the work we do or think you have expertise you can share, then please do get in touch and, if you can, consider becoming a member so we can continue to make Reading a better place for everyone.

Our members receive regular newsletters and updates, and a varied activities programme. There are opportunities to meet developers about their proposals and thus aid the shaping of Reading’s built environment.

We visit places of interest, often linking up with local civic societies, sometimes hosting them in Reading. Our events are included in the Heritage Open Day programme and our AGMs have a special speaker. Events have included visits to new housing developments, historic gardens and local businesses. There is an annual members’ lunch in a local eatery.

Events in Reading have included visits to see the work underway at Thames Lido (Kings Meadow), the new offices of Haslams Estate Agents, the new School of Architecture at Reading University and to hear from the Head of the School. in 2023 we were invited by the Lord of the Manor of Bucklebury House for a guided tour of his wonderful garden and treated to lunch. In 2024 we visited the Station Hill development, hosted by Lincoln Property, to see the latest buildings under construction and understand the ethos of the developers and what value the development is bringing to our town. In previous years we have been to Bath, Malvern, Southampton, Poole and Winchester where we usually meet up with members of the local Civic Society. Our London visits have been led by a Blue Badge Guide and have included Docklands, Spitalfields, Southwark and the Kings Cross and St Pancras area.
